Fun and Fancy Free

Who doesn’t love free stuff?  Perhaps Bill Gates or Donald Trump don’t search out great deals but most everyone I know loves a freebie.  And luckily for me, this week has been full of them!

I love free stuff!

I love free stuff!

I guess technically my streak started on Friday and Saturday, since I got those weird free issues of Forbes (thankfully, no more since then).  However since I didn’t really want them, I’m not counting it.  Officially (in my book), things began on Sunday when I went to the annual Volunteer Brunch for the food pantry I help out at.   It was held at an Irish restaurant and the food was delicious, as always.  I enjoyed fruit, pancakes, eggs, potatoes, muffins and some more fruit, all without shelling out dime.  Then on Monday a coworker gave me a Valentine’s Day cookie she made over the weekend.  It looks store bought (as you can see for yourself) and tasted better than most anything I could have purchased.  She also used the healthiest ingredients possible so I feel just a tad less guilty for enjoying it so much!

Tuesday started off with another free treat as the Corner Bakery, Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks have all been handing out free beverages in the lobby of our building this week.  It’s a “sweet treat” also in honor of Valentine’s Day and I’m not complaining.  I would’ve grabbed something Monday morning but my train ran a little late and I didn’t have the time; however, I made up for that yesterday and today.  I nabbed a delicious hot chocolate yesterday morning and it was one of the very last they had left, so it was extra chocolate-y since it had been at the bottom of their thermos.

Last night, Scott and I went to a couples massage class at a local massage therapist’s office to learn some techniques and strategies for good, old-fashioned back rubbing.  It was all PG, I promise.  We, along with a few other couples besides ourselves, picked up some good tips in the hour and a half long class, all for the low low price of nothing.  Again, score!

Today I managed to get a free Starbucks hot tea from the gal in the lobby (though to be completely honest, it was kind of gross).  Then my lovely coworker gave me another heart-shaped cookie, which is definitely not so gross.  All in all, not a bad haul for it being only Wednesday!  Now if only I could somehow manage to get a free envelope containing hundred dollar bills…

Yesterday, Scott and I took the Dude in for a little grooming.  Being a Himalayan cat, his hair grows almost longer than mine and somehow manages to find its way over every surface in our apartment.  I vacuum enough for the girl below us to plot a double-murder but every time I turn around, there are new patches on the rugs or couches that could almost allow me to make my own cat-haired pillow (which my allergic self would never do, don’t you worry).  We’ve had him shaved twice so far since adopting him and besides the fact that it makes it easier to deal with my allergies and makes the apartment easier to keep clean, it’s also hilarious to look at.  Case in point:

Someone's not happy.

Someone’s not impressed.

Notice the little puff of white at the end of his tail?  Yeah, I love that.  He seemed pretty pissed off for the first hour or so after we got him home, but once we busted out his new bed and gave him some lovin’, he accepted his newly shorn fate.  I’m breathing easier and getting some laughs every time I glance his way so it’s a win-win all around!

PS – the massage I had on Friday was pretty much the best one I’ve ever had (out of the 3 or so I’ve had in my life).  It was amazing and I had to restrain myself from hugging the guy on my way out.  Now if only I could convince a professional to do that once a week every week for the rest of my life…

Good and Bad

January 4, 2013 at 4:08 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , )

I like to keep things balanced and I find that life typically evens itself out.  Therefore, here’s a super short list of some good and bad things happening today:

  • Good – I’m getting a massage after work today, thanks to the Christmas present gift card from my wonderful boyfriend.  I’m hoping for a beefy German guy who won’t be shy about working out the massive knot that has resided in my upper right shoulder for the better part of a decade.  Bring it, beefcake!
  • Bad – I have a hole in the crotch of my jeans.  I knew it was happening but when I got to work this morning and looked down, I was amazed at its quick progress.  I love these jeans and I don’t think there’s any hope saving them, so I will be looking for a new pair this weekend.  And I’ve barely been able to leave my desk all day.

At least it’s not this bad…

And now on a grander scale:

  • Good – Illinois is thisclose to passing same-sex marriage!  Sure, it’s not a done deal yet but it’s closer than it ever has been.  Being the 10th state in the country to make such a leap forward would be a fantastic way to start the New Year!
  • Bad – my favorite primates of all time, bonobos, are at risk for extinction.  I was introduced to these peace-loving, free sex-having chimps in college and they’ve held a special place in my heart ever since.  And if the fighting in the Congo doesn’t get better soon (which isn’t likely to happen), then the only natural habitat they have will be gone.  Can’t we all just follow their lead, rub one out and get along?

No matter what, I have high hopes that this year will bring more good things than bad.  And if not…at least I have the hands of Hans to massage my troubles away!
