Friday Round Up

A few little things to make up one big post…

Let’s see, where to start.  How about with the AMAZING weather we’ve been having this week!  I know I’ve spent enough time bitching and moaning about the cold and snow, and it finally seems that those days have passed (for now).  Yesterday, Chicago broke records and hit 83 degrees – which is insane, considering the highs were in the 30’s over the weekend.  I have officially forgotten my winter coat exists and I’ve been wearing skirts and sandals all week long.  I even got to have my first outdoor beer of the season, with a super cool buddy at his super cool favorite bar.  Cody’s Public House features a large indoor drinking area, complete with pool table and juke box.  They also have a giant beer garden out back, which is where we sat all evening.  The beers were reasonably priced and people can bring dogs to the garden, which is always cool.  They also have a few grills that you can apparently use anytime, provided you clean up after yourself.  It was fantastic to sit outside and enjoy a cold brew, I must admit.  I’ve been looking forward to that for months.  Also, I stumbled into yet another conversation about what is hereby dubbed vajazzaling…that seems to be everywhere this week.  Well, everywhere but anywhere near me.

I wasn’t the only one enjoying the warmer weather.  It seems that people are getting a little crazy as the temps rise, and as I walked home this week I encountered a few things that I just don’t remember seeing during the winter.  First, I passed by a dirt lot where four long-haired, bare-chested men were drinking beer and playing horseshoes.  For a minute I thought I was back in Indiana, but nope, just some city rednecks enjoying the sun.  I also passed a very large, hairy man sunbathing on his front porch, beer conveniently perched atop his ample stomach.  Then there was the two car pile up that smashed into the fence of a nearby apartment building – again, not something I see every day.  Perhaps the guys involved in the wreck were in a hurry to get to the beach?  Or maybe I just need to find a new neighborhood…

Moving on.  I don’t have enough WTF moments to fill the post today but I have recently seen some commercials for a product that made those three little letters stand out in my head.

Can someone please explain to me what the hell this is?  Because to me, it looks like a great way to have a heart attack on your way to the office.  I get the appeal of the breakfast sandwich, trust me, but to wrap it all up in waffles seems disrespectful to both the sandwich and the waffle.  Also, which condiment do you put on this thing?  Syrup or ketchup?  Both?  What an artery clogging nightmare.

Next item on the list – World Autism Awareness Day.  In 2007, the United Nations adopted a resolution to declare April 2 World Autism Day.  Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the ares of social interaction and communication skills (from the Autism Society of America).  At the learning center I work in, we have many students who fall somewhere on the autism spectrum.  There is nothing inherently wrong with these kids, they just need tolerance and understanding because they experience the world in a different way.  Here are some quick facts:

*1 in 110 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with autism 1 in 70 are boys

*1 to 1.5 millions Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder

*Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S. today

*More children will be diagnosed this year with autism than AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined

It’s good to raise awareness because autism is a disability that is difficult to understand.  The more we know, the more we can help those whom it affects.  So Happy Autism Awareness Day!

Since today is April 2, yesterday was obviously April 1st, or April Fool’s Day (above is a photo of Google’s prank for the day).  Last year, my little sister got me with a good one and I must admit, I’ve been looking forward to getting her back.  Her gag involved her calling me all upset with news that someone she was dating just told her he had a serious STD.  I immediately went into Big Sister mode and started trying to calm her down.  I began listing places she could go to get checked out and talked about how she should go about telling anyone else she may have been seeing.  I guess she had me on speaker phone because I wasn’t too far into my speech when I heard a lot of laughter.  She was surrounded by her friends, and she got me.

This year, I had the perfect prank in mind.  I sent her a text in the morning saying that my ex-boyfriend had emailed me and wanted to get together to talk about “us”, because he missed me.  If you know me, you probably know I was pretty upset over getting dumped last year.  In reality, I’ve moved into an entirely different place in my life and know I am much, much better off.  My sister agrees.   She told me to let him buy me an expensive dinner then tell him off, but I wrote her back saying how much I missed him, blah blah blah.  She replied that I should probably talk to someone else because she was biased (the ex in question treated me quite poorly in the end).  I could tell she was ticked, so I let her in on the gag.  She admitted it was a good one and then encouraged me to pull it on my mom.  I did, and Mom reacted in much the same way as my sister.  When I finally told her that I hadn’t heard a thing from the ex and that was fine with me, Mom called me a little shit and also admitted that I had got her.  I win this year!

Guess what?  I do have one more WTF for the week.  I think I’m getting sick.  What is that about?  I haven’t had an illness in years but I’ve been coughing like an 80-year-old woman with a bad cigarette habit for two days now.  Really?  I wonder if this has something to do with the rapid change in seasons, but no one else around me seems to be suffering any ill effects.  Freaking wonderful.  So I’ve been gulping down tea infused with lots of honey, drinking orange juice and sucking on cough drops in what appears to be a futile attempt to stay healthy.  This is especially annoying because I’m traveling out of town this weekend.  I’m heading downtown in mere hours to catch that lovely contraption, the megabus, which will take me once again to the crossroads of America.  The weekend will be full of food, family and…church.  Oh, and lots of eggs.  I’m sure I’ll have more to say about that when I return, but until then…
